Understanding the Benefits of Prenatal Therapeutic Massage
Pregnancy can bring about various physical and emotional changes, leading to discomfort such as back pain, swelling, headaches, and more. Our Prenatal Therapeutic Massage treatments are designed to provide relief from these symptoms and promote overall well-being for expecting mothers. As a clinic, we support our pregnant and new moms with pain, tightness and discomfort as well as athletic support… because you don’t necessarily have to stop being active when you’re pregnant (check with your MD first).
What to Expect at Our Office
We want our clients to know exactly what to expect, so there are no surprises. It’s important to note that this service is not specifically focused solely on relaxation, and while we use pillows for support and your comfort, we don’t have other special equipment. Our approach is therapeutic and tailored to support your body’s needs during pregnancy. And while all of our therapists are nurturing and supportive, they really shine as clinicians who can help you feel great when you feel like you need the support. You always deserve it, of course!
How Prenatal Therapeutic Massage Can Help You!
Prenatal Therapeutic Massage is tailored to the unique needs of pregnant women. Our skilled massage therapists use gentle to deep, targeted techniques to alleviate tension, reduce swelling, and improve circulation, all while creating a calming and nurturing environment. We understand that many of our expecting mothers and new moms may need deep treatment work, and we’re happy to provide that if appropriate. Our therapists will use clear communication and check-in with you and we invite the same from our clients.
Alleviating Back Pain
During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant changes, often leading to back pain. Prenatal massage helps relieve tension in the lower back by loosening tight muscles and improving mobility.
Reducing Swelling
Massage therapy stimulates circulation and helps reduce fluid buildup, which can cause swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet during pregnancy.
Easing Headaches and Neck Pain
Prenatal massage is effective in reducing the frequency and severity of headaches. By targeting areas of tension, the massage encourages relaxation and stress relief, reducing pregnancy-related headaches and neck tightness.
Promoting Emotional Well-being
Pregnancy can bring about emotional fluctuations due to hormonal changes. Prenatal Therapeutic Massage not only soothes the body but also promotes emotional balance and reduces stress, contributing to better overall mental health.
Improving Sleep Quality
Many expectant mothers experience sleep disturbances during pregnancy. Prenatal massage helps relax the body and mind, improving sleep patterns and promoting deeper, more restful sleep.
Preparing the Body for Labor
Regular prenatal massage can help prepare the body for labor by improving circulation, promoting relaxation, and reducing muscle tension. This helps expecting mothers enter labor with a more relaxed and balanced body.

Prenatal & Postnatal Therapeutic Massage FAQs
Prenatal therapeutic massage is specifically designed to support pregnant and postpartum bodies — addressing soreness, tight hips, low‑back discomfort, swollen legs, and changing posture. Yes, it’s safe when performed by skilled therapists (especially after the 1st trimester) who are trained in prenatal care. We adapt positioning, pressure, and techniques to protect you and enhance comfort throughout each trimester and postpartum. And we are careful about pressure around the ankles and inner thighs, as well as around the belly, when necessary.
You can begin prenatal massage as soon as you feel the need. It’s preferred after the 1st trimester for safety and many women start in the second trimester when muscle tension, posture changes, and discomfort often begin. For optimal benefit in Boulder’s active lifestyle, we recommend regular sessions (every 2–4 weeks) during pregnancy and early postpartum, tapering to monthly maintenance as you ease into routine life.
Our prenatal massage supports common issues: low‑back and hip pain, sciatica, upper back/shoulder tension from carrying baby, leg and foot swelling, poor sleep due to discomfort, and general muscle fatigue from training, walking, or trail runs. We also support postpartum recovery: scar‑tissue release, pelvic floor support, and soothing tension from nursing or carrying baby. And we can help prepare your body if you’re trying to get pregnant.
Absolutely. We understand Boulder’s active culture. Whether you’re trail‑running, cycling the Front Range, lifting, or simply staying mobile, our prenatal posture-aware and movement‑aware massage techniques help you stay comfortable, recover faster, and transition into motherhood without giving up your lifestyle. Discuss your activity level with your doctor please.
Arrive a few minutes early so we can review any changes in symptoms or training. Drinking water before and after is helpful. Let us know if you’ve been hiking, cycling, or exercising today so we can tailor the session. Post‑session, allow yourself some very light activity and avoid intense training the same day if possible.
We work with new moms, including those recovering from cesarean-sections, pelvic floor changes, or postpartum muscle/ligament shifts. Our therapists use gentle but effective techniques for scar-tissue release (deeper if appropriate), muscle imbalance correction, and movement re‑education to help you regain strength, mobility, and comfort.
Yes — while massage is generally beneficial, we check for conditions like pre‑eclampsia, early labor, high‑risk pregnancies, or recent heavy bleeding. Always consult your OB/GYN or midwife and inform us of any complications so we can adjust or postpone your session safely. Receiving work in the 1st trimester can create some additional risk so work in the 2nd trimester is usually preferred.
Yes! Many of our pregnant or postpartum clients in Boulder combine prenatal massage with our
sports massage,
acupuncture, or
mobility programs to support their active training, recovery, or just maintain functional comfort. We coordinate internally so your care plan feels cohesive and supportive but always be your own advocate and inform your treating therapist about your goals and concerns.
Our sessions are typically 50 or 80 minutes, aligned with your treatment length. Afterward, expect to feel lighter and more relaxed, and you’ll likely sleep better. We suggest avoiding heavy training or long hikes the same day — a light walk or easy movement is preferred as recovery.
Every body is different, but most women in Boulder’s active community can begin gentle walking and low-impact movement within a few weeks. Running, hiking, or strength training is usually safe once your core and pelvic floor feel stable, and you’ve received clearance from your healthcare provider. Our therapists can help you transition safely with postural support and gradual reconditioning.
Yes. Massage helps relieve upper back, neck, and shoulder tension from holding and nursing your baby. We’ll coach you on your posture and may have suggestions to mitigate those challenging positions. It also improves circulation and helps the body recover from repetitive strain associated with lifting, bending, and daily postpartum activities.
Absolutely. We provide gentle stretches, posture guidance, and core/pelvic floor exercises tailored for postpartum recovery. This guidance complements your massage sessions and supports long-term strength, flexibility, and comfort for active moms in Boulder.
Yes. Our prenatal massage is specifically adapted for active women. We monitor positioning, pressure, and technique to prevent strain, while helping you recover from your workouts, hiking, running, or strength sessions.
